Classrooms - 5-Year-Old Kindergarten

At Grace Lutheran, Oak Creek, our kindergarten for five-year olds is called 5K. It’s great to be in 5K!

We start our day with choice play and centers. We like blocks and puzzles. We also like dramatic play in our housekeeping center or writing stories and drawing pictures. All the things we do help us to learn reading and math skills.

After choice play we have our religion lesson. We like to sing, “Come Let Us Worship” and “This Is the Day”. Then we know that “Jesus Time” is starting. In the fall we learn about Bible people like Moses and Daniel and King David. At Christmas time we learn about Jesus’ birth and how He grew up. Later in the year we learn about Jesus’ life and His miracles. During Lent we learn about His suffering and death. Then comes Easter and we learn about how Jesus rose from the dead, something that we will also do someday when we go to be with Jesus in heaven. One of our favorite songs reminding us of Easter is, “Do You Know Who Died for Me?” We learn the Lord’s Prayer and two special blessing prayers. Every two weeks we memorize Bible verses reminding us of God’s love. In fact, every day we learn more about God’s love and about how God showed His love by sending His precious Son Jesus.

After religion comes reading. We review alphabet letters with Letter People stories, songs and coloring pages. We look at lot of picture books. We love Curious George and any of the I Spy books. We do workbook pages that help us practice sight words and word families. We also read pre-primers and write our own stories.

Math is important to us in 5K. We love numbers! We have workbooks to help us practice printing numbers, counting up to twenty, telling time, and adding and subtracting. To help us with math skills we also play Bingo, Memory, and Dominoes. By the end of the year we can all count to one hundred!

Reading and math are important, but we also learn about God’s wonderful world. We have units about plants and animals and seasons. We learn about magnets and maps. We learn about the helpers God gives us and how children live in other places around the world.

We also learn many new things in our computer classes. We do lots of singing and dancing in our music classes. We even learn how to read and say things in Spanish in our Friday Spanish class!

As you can tell, 5K is a busy and exciting experience. It’s great to be in 5K!
