Frequently Asked Questions

1.      Are the teachers licensed?
All of our teachers are licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

2.      Are there specific qualifications to teach in Lutheran schools?
All of our teachers are members of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.
To teach at Grace Lutheran teachers must have specialized training in Bible teachings and how to relate these teachings to the curriculum.

3.      Must we be Lutheran to enroll our children at Grace Lutheran School?
Members from the community are not only welcome but also are intimately involved in the life of Grace Lutheran School. We do encourage families without a “home church” to investigate becoming a member of Grace. Others, while always welcome at Grace, are encouraged to show their children that their church membership is important to them. As students in Grace Lutheran School there are times when the children are expected to worship at Grace. Those times are, for example, when the school is presenting a Christmas pageant or when the school children are scheduled to provide an anthem for a Grace Lutheran Church Service.

4.      How many children are in each classroom?
Our current average classroom enrollment is about 15.  Our 4K class is given an aide because the enrollment has exceeded 15.

5.      Is your 5K a full day or half day program? How about the 4K program?
The 5’s attend class all day, 8:30-3:15.
The core 4K program is half day, 8:30 to noon. Unique to Grace Lutheran School is the afternoon program that provides supplementary enrichment activities for the 4K children. Individual 4K attendance schedules may be altered weekly according to family needs and preferences.

6.      We understand that you have two grades in each classroom. Are there advantages to this arrangement?
Classrooms for the 4K and 5K are in their own classrooms. Grades 1-8 are in multi-aged classrooms. The size of our student body allows teachers to know all of the students. Upper grade teachers see the students for several years before actually becoming the students’ primary teacher. Since student/teacher relationship is of primary importance in providing meaningful instruction, having a student for more than one year allows the teacher to more readily meet individual student’s needs. Also, being in a classroom with more than one grade level helps students prepare for the next school year as well as reviewing what had previously been taught. We do some departmentalizing in the upper grades. Departmentalization allows teachers to teach to their strengths and gives the students some experience in relating with more than one teacher, a real plus when entering high school.

7.      Do you offer children the opportunity to participate in the fine arts?
We have an excellent vocal music program. The culminating activity is an exceptionally fine concert presented in the spring of each year.
Our music teacher is available after school hours to provide private piano instruction.
Beginning with fifth grade, students are given an opportunity to receive instruction in playing band instruments. The instructor is provided by the Lutheran High School Association.
Students are given opportunity to present a Christmas pageant in a special worship service that is attended by parishioners and extended family.
Annually, student art work is displayed for the public.
Younger students annually attend one or two professionally presented children’s plays.
Older students are given the opportunity to attend a young people’s concert at the Milwaukee Symphony.

8.      What technology training do you offer students?
All students in grades 4K through 8th grade have a separate computer class every week. Using filtering software, the fifteen networked computers in the lab are connected to the Internet. Students learn computer skills such as computer basics, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, keyboarding, graphics, and internet skills.

9.      Do you have an athletic program for both boys and girls?
Students in grades 1 through 8 participate in cross country. Fifth through 8th graders have boys and girls basketball teams and the 5th through 8th grade girls have a volleyball team. Enrollment considerations sometimes allow us to form teams by combining Grace students with students from other schools. As with any athletic competition, students are encouraged to learn and have fun, but the primary goal of the athletic program is to teach Christian sportsmanship that honors and glorifies God.
Grace Lutheran School is a member of the Milwaukee Lutheran Elementary School Athletic Association.

10. Where do your graduates attend high school?
We strongly encourage our students to continue their Christian education at Martin Luther High School and are pleased to say that many of our graduates do this. Others attend local public high schools. Our information from our graduates and their parents is that our alumni are well prepared for the challenges of high school, Lutheran or public.

11. Where does the school receive its financial support?
Grace Lutheran School is a ministry of Grace congregation. Consequently, a majority of the financial support is from the congregation. School tuition and registration fees are how the remaining school costs are met. The PTLS (Parent Teacher League) has various fund raising activities. A major project of the PTLS is to provide funding for one month of the mortgage payment. PTLS funds also provide opportunities for school families to socialize, for student off-campus opportunities, and for special curricular and extra-curricular classroom needs.

12. What are the school hours?
Students are admitted at 8:15. Classes begin at 8:30. Dismissal time is 3:15.

13. Does Grace provide for before and after school care?
We have supervised before and after school care on days when school is in session. There is a financial obligation for parents who use this program.
